My friend, Randy, and I were flying this morning. (I am photographing marsh reclamation projects for Great Lakes Dredge and Dock)
Suddenly Randy says to me, "I bet most people don't know that the Mississippi River is surrounded by water." That sounds crazy, but it is true. In South Louisiana, if it weren't for the levies, you probably wouldn't be able to tell the river, from the marsh.
South Louisiana is sinking so fast that the State reports an area the size of a football field is disappearing every 15-20 minutes. What you see in this photo, was once all farmland around the Mississippi River.
Click on the photo (above), and you will see the river in the foreground. This is one of the areas with more land.
